Walk Of SHAME

It is not the most delightful and exciting of topics, but i felt like writing about it. Exposing what it felt like for everyone or some people is what I will try to do for us to be on the same page. I will do well to include quotes from others as much as i can. Enjoy!

Urban Dictionary has become my favourite source of definitions for socially-iconic words or phrases. These, per my stand, are words or phrases that are birthed out of social conventions and understanding. The definitions and usage may differ from one culture to another, but the English language has found a way to make them mean same everywhere.

According to Urban Dictionary, Walk of Shame means:

1. The walk across campus in the same clothes as yesterday after you slept with someone and spent the night in their dorm room
Scott: hey man, nice hair – you doing the walk of shame?
Dan: what, me? ah… no… I, um, fell asleep in the library…

2. When a woman leaves the home of a man (quite possibly one she met the night before) in the early morning hours; hair sticking out in all directions, makeup half gone, with her undies in a pocket or her purse.
After a night of partying and excessive drinking Cheryl woke up god-knows where with an unknown man beside her and in a fit of regret gathered her belongings as quickly and quietly as possible and crept from the man’s home in what is known as the walk of shame.

3. The walk home after a one-night stand. Sometimes celebrated as a stride of pride.
J was disheveled, hungover, and unable to remember the name of the woman whose bed he had woken up in earlier that morning. He took a back alley on the way home so that no one would witness his walk of shame.

4. In college, when you hook up with someone the night before and you have to walk all the way across campus
all disheveled the next morning, in the same clothes.
Chris did the walk of shame at least fifty times freshman year.

All these definitions and explanations spark a lot of interest in how the act is perceived and by what it is accompanied. Now, my reason for writing about this.

The walk of shame cannot be restricted to sexual relations nor immoral acts alone. Any action that is disappointing and causes one to have a heavy head and feel disappointed could lead to the Walk of Shame.

Have you ever experienced the Walk of Shame?

What did you do about it?

  1. Mentioning some examples other than the sexual immorality would have been great. That way, you put it in context for me, and maybe other readers, to relate. But it is a great piece. Fitting all the pieces of quotes together into one is great job done, Sir.

  2. I personally think this draws a whole new picture about this catchy phrase we generally use. Some may disagree but this is quite insightful and something most people wouldn’t like to recognise.
